Mercedes-Benz just changed how we drive forever with steer-by-wire

Mercedes-Benz is set to launch its first by-wire car next year, replacing the traditional mechanical connection between the steering wheel and front wheels with an electronic “wire”.

The global car brand will be the first German car manufacturer to offer a production vehicle with steer-by-wire from 2026, allowing drivers to send their steering requests quickly and directly via an electrical cable, thereby marking a new era of vehicle operation.

According to the Benz Group, the technology, combined with SAE Level 3 conditionally automated driving, will provide an immersive entertainment experience in the medium term. Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management and Chief Technology Officer, Development & Procurement, explains that the flat steering wheel improves display viewing during streaming.

Mercedes claims that its by-wire technology has several advantages over traditional mechanical systems, including faster reaction, improved handling, increased maneuverability, and reduced steering effort.

The technology employs a variable steering ratio, which allows the steering to accelerate at low speeds while slowing down at higher speeds. Mercedes also says that the by-wire system eliminates the feel of uneven road surfaces on the steering wheel, albeit this is uncertain.

For a more roomy sensation and a better view of the driver’s display, the steering wheel can be made flatter. This also facilitates getting in and out of the vehicle. The steering rack, which steers the wheels, receives the steering signal from the steering feedback units (SFU).

Mercedes-Benz’s signature steering feel is produced by this mechanism. Using the restoring forces of the steering wheels, steering torque is eliminated, and the tire-road contact is computed model-by-model.

Safety is central to the technology’s deployment. Mercedes-Benz has engineered full system redundancy, including dual signal paths, actuators, and backup power.

Mercedes-Benz’s steer-by-wire system has completed over one million test kilometers on benches and proving grounds, ensuring high safety standards. The system uses a redundant system architecture with high-precision sensors and control units, requiring twice the number of actuators and redundant on-board data and power supply.

This ensures steering ability and lateral guidance even in the unlikely event of a complete failure, thanks to rear-axle steering and targeted wheel-specific braking interventions via ESP.

According to Mercedes, the system is a perfect match for cars equipped with rear-steering, including the S-class and EQS sedans.  Mercedes-Benz will bring steer-by-wire technology to its production vehicles starting in 2026.
