Stellantis to lay off 900 employees following tariff imposition

In response to President Donald Trump’s 25% tariff on all auto imports, Stellantis is temporarily terminating 900 US employees at five of its U.S. sites and halting production at its assembly operations in Mexico and Canada.

The company has chosen to take some quick steps, but it is still evaluating the medium and long-term impacts of these tariffs on its operations. These included temporarily stopping production at a few assembly plants in Canada and Mexico, which had an impact on jobs at a number of Stellantis’ powertrain and stamping plants in the United States, according to Reuters.

Stellantis’ stock, which only produces half of its cars in the US, ended Thursday’s trading session 9.3% lower in New York. Tesla, General Motors, and Ford all saw significant declines in their stock prices. According to data firm GlobalData, almost half of the cars sold in the United States last year were imported.

Reuters also revealed that in addition to the Toluca Assembly in Mexico, which produces the Jeep Compass and Jeep Wagoneer S, Stellantis said that its Windsor Assembly, which produces the Chrysler Pacifica and Voyager minivans as well as the Dodge Charger Daytona, will be closed for two weeks during April.

While employees at Toluca will still show up for work and receive their wages despite not producing cars, approximately 4,500 staff at Windsor will be affected by the inactive.
