In an effort to transform how people interact with the internet, Perplexity AI has released Comet, its first web browser driven by artificial intelligence. Along with Perplexity’s default search engine, the browser incorporates an AI assistant that can summarize content, respond to queries on webpages, and carry out operations like scheduling meetings and completing purchases.

“Comet is a web browser built for today’s internet,” the company said in its announcement. “It lets the internet do what it’s been begging to do: amplify our intelligence.”

Comet is a new browsing tool designed to replace traditional search methods with agentic AI. It simplifies tasks and compiles information in one place, aiming to nurture curiosity in the web. Comet integrates an AI assistant that can answer questions, summarize articles, compare products, book meetings, send emails, and buy items.

In a blog post, the company explains that Comet is an intelligent interface that aims to shift the focus from browsing to thinking. It removes friction with every thought, actively conducting browsing sessions while allowing users to focus on what matters. Comet can help users understand complex concepts, find hidden connections, create new possibilities, and solve problems. It also allows users to compare what they’re reading to something they’ve already read. This helps users find joy in their work and fuel their curiosity.

Key features of Comet

The Comet browser, which is based on Chromium, has an AI agent called Comet Assistant built in that can examine the content of webpages. It lets users gather summaries, evaluate content, and ask questions without navigating between tabs.

By integrating cloud-based APIs for sophisticated operations with local processing for simpler tasks, the browser employs a hybrid AI architecture. Comet puts privacy first, with many tracking options and local data storage.

It differs from Chrome’s stricter ad-blocking strategy by also having a native ad blocker. Its hybrid architecture makes sure that bookmarks and settings are migrated smoothly and that it works with existing Chrome extensions.

Comet is available to subscribers of the Perplexity Max tier, which costs $200 per month. The Max subscription offers unlimited access to Perplexity Labs, early access to new features, and priority access to AI models like OpenAI’s o3-pro and Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4. The browser is available for Windows and macOS, with plans to add support for more operating systems and mobile versions in the future.
