Zuckerberg to set up AI that surpasses human capabilities

Mark Zuckerberg, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Meta Platforms, is establishing a team of experts to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) that can match or surpass human intelligence.

This comes alongside a reported investment of over $10 billion in Scale AI, with founder Alexandr Wang expected to join the AGI group after the deal is completed.

According to Bloomberg, Zuckerberg plans to recruit around 50 people, including a new head of AI research for the AGI team. This recruitment effort is driven partly by frustration over the performance and reception of Meta’s latest large language model, Llama 4.

He believes that most of the code for the Llama project will be written by AI, saying that now, AI is better than the average very good person, and soon, it will be better than top coders.

The billionaire is attempting to bring to light a prediction he made in the past that AI will have human-level perception within the 2021 to 2026 timeframe, to enhance human experiences, such as better news feeds on Facebook apps.

According to him, the focus is on building computer services with a better perception than humans, including basic human senses such as sight, hearing, and language. It is possible to achieve computer systems that are better than people over the next decade, although this doesn’t mean they will be thinking or generally better.

Top rivals like OpenAI are also looking to make changes to attract further investment in a bid to develop AGI.

Meta is the parent platform of social media apps, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
