WhatsApp has introduced an AI-powered feature that provides message summaries for unread chats. The optional feature aims to help users quickly catch up on missed messages by offering a private and secure overview before reading the full details. This helps users avoid scrolling through piles of text.
This initiative is part of Meta’s broader strategy to integrate artificial intelligence tools across its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.
‘Message Summaries’ uses a private computing framework called “Private Processing”. The feature ensures that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can access the messages or summaries generated through this feature.

“No one else in the chat can see that you summarized unread messages either. This means your privacy is protected at all times,” the company said in a blog post.
Users will not be notified if they opt to use the summary tool, ensuring encryption and user control remain intact. This privacy-first approach is designed to be particularly useful in busy group chats, allowing users to catch up on long threads without scrolling through every message.
Message Summaries is rolling out in the English language to people in the United States and we hope to bring it to other languages and countries later this year.
