Apple has warned iPhone owners not to sleep close to their gadgets as they charge, since extended heat exposure may cause discomfort or harm. The warning is based on the most recent version of Apple’s iPhone User Guide, which indicates that while iPhone and Apple USB power adapters are intended to meet surface temperature restrictions, prolonged contact with warm surfaces can be uncomfortable.

Apple strongly advises consumers to charge their phones in well-ventilated areas in order to reduce these risks. They also recommend against charging phones while they are tucked under pillows or blankets.

iPhones generate heat during charging, which can cause burns or fires if not released easily. Therefore, placing a charging phone beneath a pillow is considered one of the most unsafe practices for smartphone users.

Apple also warned users against using damaged cables or chargers or charging when moisture is present. According to the company, this act can cause fire, electric shock, injury, or damage to the iPhone or other property.

To charge the iPhone, the USB connector must be fully inserted into a compatible power adapter before plugging it into a power outlet. Users must remove metallic cases from wireless chargers and avoid placing metallic foreign objects on them, as they may become warm or interfere with charging.

Effects of charging phones in bed

Sleep experts have highlighted the negative effects of phone charging on sleep quality. They explain that constant notifications and screen light can disrupt sleep patterns, preventing deep, restorative sleep.

They emphasize the fire risk of charging phones under pillows or blankets, as they trap heat and increase the risk of overheating. To reduce these risks, charging phones on open, flat surfaces away from flammable materials is highly recommended. Experts also discuss the psychological implications of being too close to a phone at night, highlighting the cycle of dependency and the need for a tech-free zone. It is important to establish a tech-free zone at least an hour before bedtime to improve sleep hygiene.
