With Huawei’s gesture-sensing tech, you don’t need to open a car with your hands

Huawei has introduced a new high-tech feature that lets drivers open their car doors with a simple hand gesture — no touching needed. This touchless system is part of the AITO M9, a smart SUV developed in partnership with Chinese carmaker Seres. By simply performing a specific hand gesture near the vehicle, the system detects the motion and automatically opens the door.

Instead of pressing a button or pulling a handle, all you need to do is wave your hand in a certain way near the door. The car uses sensors and smart software to recognize the gesture and automatically opens the door for you. It’s especially useful if your hands are full or if you want to avoid touching surfaces for hygiene reasons.

A demonstration of this technology can be seen in a recent video shared on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing the AITO M9’s door opening in response to a user’s hand gesture.

Could this affect Ghana’s car market?

While the technology is impressive, it may take some time before such high-end features become common in Ghana. Most vehicles on the Ghanaian market are imported used cars, and many buyers prioritize affordability and durability over luxury features. However, as electric and smart vehicle adoption slowly increases — especially among middle and upper-income buyers — innovations like Huawei’s gesture-sensing tech could eventually influence what local consumers expect from modern cars.

Also, with Ghana’s growing interest in digital transformation and smart mobility, such advanced features could appeal to tech-savvy users and government agencies interested in showcasing cutting-edge innovation. But for now, gesture-opening car doors remain more of a premium extra than a mainstream necessity.
