Microsoft is stepping up security in its popular Teams platform by introducing a new feature that will block screenshots and recordings during meetings. This update, called “Prevent Screen Capture,” is set to roll out in July 2025 and aims to protect sensitive information shared in virtual discussions.
How does it work?
Once enabled, the feature will black out the screen if someone tries to take a screenshot or record the meeting. This applies to Teams desktop apps on Windows and Mac, as well as mobile apps on iOS and Android. If a participant joins from a device that doesn’t support this feature, they will be placed in audio-only mode, meaning they won’t be able to see the shared content at all.
With more businesses relying on virtual meetings to discuss confidential matters, Microsoft wants to reduce the risk of unauthorized sharing. Screenshots and recordings can easily be shared outside the meeting, leading to potential data leaks. By blocking these actions, Teams is making sure that sensitive discussions stay private.
Can people still record meetings?
While this feature prevents direct screen captures, it doesn’t stop someone from using an external camera to record the screen. Microsoft acknowledges this limitation but believes the new tool will significantly reduce casual or accidental leaks.
Will it be turned on automatically?
Microsoft hasn’t confirmed whether the feature will be enabled by default or if meeting organizers will need to turn it on manually. Businesses and IT administrators may have the option to customize settings based on their security needs.
This update is part of a larger effort by Microsoft to enhance security and privacy in Teams. Other upcoming features include better control over screen sharing and AI-powered meeting summaries.
