In recent years, Instagram has transformed from a photo-sharing app into a bustling marketplace for online shoppers. With just a few taps, users can browse and secure services as well as purchase everything from fashion items to electronics and gadgets. However, this convenience has come with a significant downside – a surge in online shopping fraud.

According to the Ghana Cybersecurity Authority, victims lost at least GHC 3.5 million through online shopping and romance scams in 2023. Between January and March 2024 alone, an estimated GHC 2 million was lost to online fraud.

In an article published on Techlabari, Maureen Atebawone, a customer experience expert, explains that Instagram’s visual appeal and algorithm-driven content make it an attractive platform for shoppers.

“Once you show interest in a product or search for an item, you’re bombarded with targeted ads, making it incredibly tempting to buy,” she notes.

Unfortunately, scammers exploit this convenience by creating fake profiles and online stores, luring unsuspecting shoppers with attractive deals and products. The financial and emotional toll on victims can be devastating. Beyond the immediate monetary loss, victims often experience feelings of betrayal and embarrassment.

To safeguard against online shopping fraud, consider these steps to consider before purchasing a product.

  1. Verify the seller: Before making a purchase, research the seller’s profile. Look for reviews, ratings, and any red flags.
  2. Use secure payment methods: Opt for payment methods that offer buyer protection, such as credit cards or reputable payment platforms. Avoid direct bank transfers or mobile money payments to unknown individuals.
  3. Be skeptical of too-good-to-be-true deals: If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Exercise caution with heavily discounted items or limited-time offers.
  4. Avoid sharing personal information: Never share sensitive information like your Ghana card number, bank details, or passwords with unverified sources.
  5. Report suspicious activity: If you encounter a scam or suspect fraudulent activity, report it to the Cybercrime Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) by calling the Ghana Police Helpline at 18555 or 191

While Instagram provides an exciting and convenient shopping experience, it’s important to stay alert. Being informed and cautious helps Ghanaian shoppers or anyone enjoy online shopping while avoiding scams and fraudsters.
