How to prepare your car for the rainy season

The rainy season in Ghana is a blessing for many people, especially the farming community and those in areas where water is a scarce commodity. However, for drivers, it can become challenging as heavy rains, flooded roads, and slippery surfaces mean that every car must be in top condition to handle these difficulties.

A 2024 study titled “The Impact of Climate Change on Road Traffic Crashes in Ghana” reveals a strong correlation between the wet season (April through mid-October) and crash severity across the country, with Accra, the capital, leading in this regard. The study indicated that rainfall contributed a higher causal factor (1.44%) to fatal road crashes compared to temperature (0.28%) during the dry season.

In Accra alone, 1,398 crashes were recorded during the rainy season in 2023, resulting in 88 deaths for the year. While these statistics may be alarming, there are straightforward ways to prepare your car for the wet season and ensure your safety

Check your tires

Checking car tires

Your tires are your first line of defense on wet roads. Make sure they have enough tread depth to grip slippery surfaces. Worn-out tires can be dangerous, so if yours look bald, it’s time to replace them. Also, check the air pressure—it should be just right, not too high or too low, for maximum safety and performance.

Test your wipers

Visibility is everything when it’s pouring down rain. Take a good look at your windshield wipers. Are they leaving streaks or making funny noises? That’s a sign they need replacing. Don’t wait until you’re stuck in a downpour to find out they’re not working properly.

Keep your lights bright

Rainy weather can make it hard for other drivers to see you. Check that all your lights—headlights, brake lights, and turn signals to ensure they are working well. If the lenses are cloudy, give them a clean or replace them to ensure you stay visible in heavy rain and mist.

Check your brakes

The last thing you want in wet weather is brake trouble. Have your brakes checked by a trusted mechanic to ensure they’re in top condition. Squeaky or slow brakes can mean trouble, and the rainy season is not the time to take risks.

 Watch your battery

The damp air can sometimes cause battery issues. If your battery is old or weak, consider replacing it before the rains start. A dead battery in the middle of a storm is not something you want to deal with.

Make sure your car is dry inside

Rainwater can sneak into your car through old weather seals around the windows or doors. Check these seals for cracks or wear and tear. It’s also a good idea to keep a towel handy for drying off wet seats or floors to prevent mold or bad odors.

Stock your emergency kit

The rainy season can lead to unexpected delays, so it’s always good to be prepared. Keep an emergency kit in your car with essentials like a flashlight, first aid supplies, a phone charger, and a raincoat or umbrella. A spare tire and basic tools for changing a flat are also lifesavers.

Be careful on the road

Lastly, no amount of car prep can replace careful driving. Slow down on wet roads, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and avoid sudden braking. Flooded areas should be approached cautiously or avoided if possible.

The rainy season doesn’t have to mean stress if you’re well-prepared. By taking care of your car and driving smart, you will be able to stay safe and enjoy the beauty of the rains. After all, it’s all about keeping the journey smooth even when the roads are a little slippery. Drive safe!
