What your silent mode phone says about your personality

A new study from Kyung Hee University in South Korea has shed light on a simple habit that could make a big difference in how we work and feel every day i.e., putting our phones on silent mode. The research found that turning down the volume on your phone doesn’t just reduce noise, but helps protect your mind from stress, boosts your focus, and increases your productivity at work.

The researchers worked with 114 office workers, giving some of them a mindfulness app called InMind for four weeks. The group that used the app, especially those who also put their phones on silent, reported feeling less stressed and more focused on their tasks. Even better, their engagement with work improved significantly compared to those who didn’t join the mindfulness program.

Experts explain why this works: even a silent phone can distract you if it’s lying in front of you. The mere presence of your phone pulls at your attention, making it harder to concentrate. But when people mute their phones and put them out of sight, they reclaim control of their time and mental energy. By reducing the constant expectation of replying instantly, they create space for deeper, uninterrupted work.

This habit does more than boost productivity. Studies show that interruptions, even small ones, can take an average of 23 minutes to fully recover from. That’s time many of us in Ghana can’t afford to waste, especially with the busy schedules we juggle between work, family, and side hustles. By grouping replies into set times and silencing notifications, you not only get things done faster but also keep stress levels low.

Beyond work, putting your phone on silent has social benefits, too. People who do this are often seen as more present and attentive. They listen better and engage more deeply in conversations, strengthening trust with friends, family, and colleagues. It’s a small act that signals respect for others’ time and your focus.

Doctors and psychologists also highlight the health benefits of keeping your phone on silent. Every beep or vibration triggers a small stress response in the body, raising your heart rate and increasing the release of stress hormones like cortisol. Over time, these frequent spikes can lead to constant tension, poor sleep, and even long-term health problems. By simply turning the sound off, you allow your mind and body to relax, even during busy days.

Some people worry that putting their phone on silent means they’ll miss something important. But experienced “muters” overcome this by placing their phones out of sight or disabling distracting lock-screen previews. This creates an environment free of unnecessary distractions, letting them slip into what psychologists call a “flow state”—when you’re fully immersed in what you’re doing, whether it’s studying, working, or enjoying a hobby.

What’s inspiring is that this simple change comes with big rewards. Ghanaians who adopt silent mode often report better concentration, stronger relationships, and a greater sense of control over their lives. It shows that attention is precious and should be protected.

So the next time you feel overwhelmed by constant messages or calls, remember this study. Try putting your phone on silent and tucking it away. It’s a small step that could help you reclaim your time, improve your health, and bring more peace to your busy day.
