For years, the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange has been one of Accra’s busiest and most stressful traffic points. Connecting key areas like Madina, East Legon, and the central business district, it has long been a daily challenge for many commuters. But now, a major upgrade is underway, and it’s bringing new hope to drivers, workers, and the entire city.
The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), in partnership with the Ministry of Roads and Highways, has launched a four-month construction project to improve the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange. This is part of the larger Accra-Tema Motorway and Extensions Project, which aims to modernize 19.5 kilometers of road infrastructure.
According to GhanaWeb, the project includes building a central pier under the bridge and temporarily reducing the number of lanes from four to three in each direction.
While this may cause some short-term delays, the long-term goal is to make traffic smoother, safer, and more reliable for everyone who uses the road.
What it means for commuters

For daily commuters, especially those traveling between Madina and central Accra, the upgrade promises a major improvement in travel time. Long queues and bumper-to-bumper traffic have been a regular part of the journey.
Once the project is complete, the improved road layout is expected to reduce congestion and make commuting less stressful.
This means more time at home, less fuel wasted in traffic, and a better start and end to the workday.
A boost for drivers and transport operators

Commercial drivers and transport operators who rely on this stretch of road will also benefit. With fewer delays and smoother traffic flow, they can complete more trips in a day, reduce wear and tear on their vehicles, and improve their earnings. The upgrade is also expected to reduce the risk of accidents, making the road safer for everyone.
Hope for workers and the local economy
The construction itself is creating jobs for engineers, laborers, and traffic management staff. But beyond that, the improved interchange will support businesses by making it easier for workers and goods to move across the city. For many people, this project represents more than just a road, it’s a sign that progress is possible.
A landmark with a legacy
The Tetteh Quarshie Interchange has been a key part of Accra’s road network since it opened in 2005. Named after the man who introduced cocoa to Ghana, the interchange was designed to connect major roads like the Liberation Road, Legon East Road, and the Tema Motorway. Over time, however, the original design struggled to keep up with the city’s rapid growth.
According to Wikipedia, it was the second interchange ever built in Ghana and was meant to ease traffic in all directions. This new face-lift is not just a fix it’s a chance to finally fulfill that original promise.
Looking Ahead
The Ghana Highway Authority has urged all road users to follow signs, cooperate with traffic officials, and stay patient during the construction period. As Graphic Online reports, safety remains a top priority throughout the project.
When the dust settles and the final touches are complete, the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange will stand not just as a better road, but as a symbol of how smart infrastructure can improve everyday life.
