A lot of countries have traffic challenges, but the country with probably the most disregarded traffic rules resulting in a very chaotic road dynamic is Bangladesh.
In Bangladeshi cities, the streets are a free-for-all where traffic rules are not standard. Cars, buses, and pedestrians all compete for space on their narrow roads, and this leads to gridlock, confusion, and constant damage to the vehicles. Bangladeshi roads have become one of the most chaotic driving scenes in the world, due to a lack of traffic rule enforcement. This constantly affects people’s safety and quality of life in the country.
Since the majority of buses in Bangladesh are privately operated, drivers disregard traffic laws, and there are very few buses that are in good shape. The buses occasionally bump into each other because of their poor and small roads. Additionally, the doors are always open, conductors wait at the door to call in people even when the bus is still driving, and there is constant rivalry for passengers.
Road wardens use sticks to strike buses during extremely thick traffic jams to warn drivers to step aside. Many drivers choose not to get their buses repaired since it is costly, and even after repairs, other buses still hit them on the road. The majority of buses remain unrepaired until they are totally damaged and incapable of operating.
Surprisingly, this situation is very prevalent in most countries, especially African countries. And even though there are strict road rules in most of these countries, some drivers still disregard traffic and do what pleases them on our roads. This practice not only affects drivers and their cars, but it also affects pedestrians, as pedestrians who are not careful enough can be victims of this recklessness.
This calls for more than just penalties; it requires public awareness campaigns, civic education from a young age, better urban planning, and visible accountability. Some countries have seen progress by involving communities directly in traffic monitoring and reporting, or using technology like CCTV and speed cameras.
