Vehicle ownership is a necessity in Ghana, as in any other country. It ensures that individuals who claim ownership of a vehicle are legitimate and have full legal access to it. To verify ownership and operate a vehicle legally, individuals must go through a series of processes and possess several key documents that confirm the vehicle truly belongs to them.

For a vehicle to be cleared as roadworthy, the owner or driver must have the following documents:

Driver’s license

The first document that any road official would likely want is the driver’s license. Ghana offers six different kinds of driver’s licenses, and the kind of vehicle you drive will determine which one you need.

The six types of driver’s license are: Type A (Motorcycles, tricycles and scooters), Type B (Mini buses, taxis, pickups), Type C (Commercial vehicles like trotro, conveying medium size products), Type D (Vehicles conveying hefty products), Type E (Vehicles conveying agricultural products and industrial equipment), Type F (Vehicles conveying hefty products -vehicles with a gross weight load surpassing 35,000kgs.) The Driver and Vehicle License Authority (DVLA) office is responsible for issuing vehicle licenses in Ghana.

Vehicle license

A vehicle owner can get a vehicle license after registering their vehicle with the Driver and Vehicle License Authority. AT the DVLA office, vehicles can be registered by a car owner or by an authorized agent.

Proof of ownership

Your proof of ownership attests to your legitimacy to your car as its owner, and it’s an important document you need to have. If you want to change the ownership of your car as well, this change of ownership can be done at the DVLA office.

Roadworthiness certificate

A roadworthiness certificate is issued after a thorough inspection of a vehicle, either at the DVLA office or the Ministry of Transport office in Ghana. The inspection requires the car to be functioning properly, with all brakes and other parts functioning appropriately.

Vehicle insurance certificate

You should always have a certificate of auto insurance. With this certificate, you are guaranteed to be compensated for any legal liability that may result from using your car in an accident.
