CapCut now has rights to your content: Here’s what this means for creators

We cannot make a list of the best editing apps without mentioning CapCut, because almost every creator uses it. This app has become useful for entrepreneurs, marketers, content creators, and many others due to the array of features available on it.

However, CapCut, the parent company of TikTok, recently made a major update, changing the terms of rights holding on the app, and if you use CapCut for any purpose at all, then you must know this.

The new terms of service allow CapCut to use, alter, and profit from your content indefinitely, including your voice, face, likeness, creative edits, and branded content. This includes ads, training videos, and other forms of content without your knowledge, consent, or compensation. This includes content featuring clients or commercial campaigns.

The terms clearly state that users grant CapCut and its partners “an unconditional, irrevocable, non-exclusive, royalty-free, fully transferable (including sub-licensable), perpetual, worldwide license” for anything they want. They can modify and monetise without giving the creator a dime.

Additionally, all uploaded content is considered non-confidential. CapCut warns users not to upload sensitive or private information, as the app has the right to share or use it freely. It also disclaims any responsibility for keeping such data secure.

What to do

For creators who do not really care about these terms, they can continue using them, but for those who do, the best step for them to take is to find alternative editing apps.

Some of these editing apps are inShot, TikTok, Instagram, iMovie, Edits, and many others. Creators can also find paid options that have better terms. Some of these apps are Filmora, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, and many others. These alternatives give the user full rights to all the content they upload.

The effects of these new terms might not be evident now, but later. And by the time users finally come to understand these changes, it might be too late to retreat.
