Life jackets first, cocktails later: Must-know safety tips for boat cruising

Life can get overwhelming sometimes, and sometimes, taking a break to reconnect with nature may be the best option. One preferred choice is boat cruising. Whether it’s the calming sway of a boat on the waters, or the feel of a calm breeze on the body,  boat cruising offers a unique way to relax and embrace the beauty of the outdoors.

As the weather warms up, many of us head to lakes, rivers, or the ocean to fish, waterski, cruise, and relax on board a boat, yacht, or other personal watercraft. While embarking on the serene adventure, it is important to take note of these life-saving tips to avoid casualties of any kind.

Everyone needs to wear a life jacket

Whether you’re a good swimmer or a first-time adventurer, ensure that you’re wearing a life jacket on the boat and be sure it fits you well. This can help you stay afloat in rough waters, protect them against hypothermia, and in some cases, can keep their head above water, just in case the boat capsizes.

Check the weather forecast and be prepared for it to change

On the ocean, even a gorgeous day can rapidly turn unpleasant. When boating, pay attention to the weather forecast and keep an eye out for any changes. Watch for rapid changes in weather, high winds, or possible storms. Planning your travel appropriately and avoiding being caught off guard by inclement weather are made possible by being aware of the forecast.

Have a float plan

File a float plan that includes your intended route, estimated return time, and the number of people on board. This information is invaluable in case of emergencies. A float plan should be shared with a trusted individual—a friend, family member, or marina personnel—who can alert authorities if you fail to return as scheduled.

Drive at a safe speed and follow all boating safety and navigational rules

Two of the main causes of boating accidents are excessive speed and inadequate lookout. Be sure that you understand and strictly abide by the local regulations and legislation pertaining to the waterway. Pay attention to visibility, the volume of traffic, and the distance from any obstacles that could hinder navigation, including rocks, shoals, or floating debris.

Avoid drinking alcohol while boating

Alcohol use is a leading contributor to fatal boating accidents. Stay sharp when you’re on the water by leaving the alcohol on dry land. Just like you’re advised not to drink while driving, drinking while boating is also a dangerous thing to do, as it can impair your judgment, as well as your perception of the environment.

Protect your skin

Because there’s barely any covering on boats, your skin is exposed directly to the sunlight for all the hours you’ll be on the boat. Moisturize your body and use sunscreen to prevent the adverse effects of the sun on your skin.

Get a safety kit

While items like a fire extinguisher may seem insignificant for a boat trip, they may come in handy in case of any accident. Just like vehicles, boats also carry fuel and other electrical components that make them susceptible to accidents like fire outbreaks.

Get the boat checked Before making a boat trip, ensure the vessel is in good shape. Getting it checked by experts may help identify any mechanical, safety, or structural defects, so the boat doesn’t break down in the middle of nowhere on the open water.
