Political appointees to join fuel queues as gov’t scraps fuel allowances

As part of broader efforts to reduce government expenditure and promote fiscal discipline, President John Dramani Mahama has, with immediate effect, ordered the cancellation of the payment of fuel allowances and the allocation of fuel to all political appointees.

Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, made this announcement in a statement issued on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

The statement reads that the government is taking this big step as part of a wider cost-cutting strategy under the Mahama administration’s Reset Agenda, aimed at channeling public funds into priority sectors and essential national development needs.

“The President believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make,” the statement said.

The cancellation comes after previous austerity measures that included cutting back on ministerial appointments, shrinking the size of the government, and canceling satellite TV subscriptions for government buildings, including the presidency.

In April 2022, the government cut fuel allocation coupons for all government appointees by 50% as part of a cost-cutting strategy. The finance ministry announced the move at a press conference in Accra, stating it will affect heads of government institutions, including State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), and ensure efficient use of energy resources.

The government has also imposed a complete moratorium on the purchase of imported vehicles for the rest of the year, affecting all new orders, especially 4-wheel drives.

This was aimed at reducing the total vehicle purchases by the public sector by at least 50% for the stipulated period. The government also imposed a moratorium on foreign travel, except for pre-approved critical or statutory travel, and a moratorium on the establishment of new public sector institutions by the end of April 2022.

Local mechanic builds a four-seater vehicle from scratch with basic tools

Abubakari Sualihu, a local mechanic who runs a small mechanic shop in Tamale, has successfully built a four-seater vehicle from scratch using locally sourced materials and basic tools.

According to Graphic Online, he spent 13 months assembling the car, which is yet to be branded, using limited resources and online tutorials. The project, which cost him over GH¢26,000, showcases his creativity and potential to contribute to sustainable and affordable vehicle production in Ghana.

The vehicle, powered by an Apsonic motor engine, was inspired by a video Sualihu watched from a Chinese YouTuber. He turned a simple sketch on paper into a working car fit for everyday errands. Sualihu’s wife encouraged him to complete the project, but his workshop lacked essential machines and equipment, restricting his capacity to do more.

Graphic Online reports that Sualihu has already designed two additional vehicles and hopes to build them if he receives the necessary support. He also dreams of pursuing formal studies in engineering to sharpen his skills and make an even greater impact.

Dr. Vincent Akolbire Atindana, a lecturer at the Automotive Engineering Department of the Tamale Technical University, praised Sualihu’s efforts and urged stakeholders to help him realize his dreams. He added that supporting local vehicle assembly can boost the local economy and create jobs for many young people with similar talents and interests.

Microsoft just solved your battery problems on Windows 11

Microsoft is currently testing a new Windows 11 feature called adaptive energy saver, designed to extend battery life on portable devices. Unlike traditional energy-saving modes that activate based on remaining battery percentage, this new approach evaluates the system’s workload and power state to determine when to enable or disable energy saver mode.

It’s an opt-in feature and is being previewed in the Canary Channel for Windows Insiders, meaning some users may already see it available.

What makes the adaptive energy saver particularly discreet is that it does not alter screen brightness, a common indicator of energy-saving settings. EV importation may soon be tax-free as Ghana makes bold green policy shift

The government of Ghana plans to allow import duty exemptions for individuals and entities importing electric vehicles (EVs) as part of the National Electronic Vehicle Policy framework.

Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, announced this in Parliament, stating that his Ministry will collaborate with the Ministry of Finance to amend the Value Added Tax Act and other relevant legislations to ensure tax waivers on EV importation.

According to him, the policy will be implemented in phases, with the first phase starting from 2024 to 2026, involving the rollout of solar systems in public buildings and charging points for EVS.

The Ministry has already begun nationwide sensitization and awareness creation to promote EV usage, with sensitization events held in 13 regions, and hopes to complete the campaign in the remaining three regions by mid-2026.

Cars in Ghana, particularly those that are imported, are frequently subject to VAT at the port of entry, which can affect availability and price. However, Act 1107 allows an import VAT waiver on electric vehicles for public transportation, and not privately owned ones. Additionally, the zero-rate concession for locally manufactured textiles and assembled vehicles under the Ghana Automotive Development Programme has been extended until 31 December 2025.

The use of EVs in Ghana will enhance its contribution to global climate resilience and promote environmental sustainability, and tax waivers will go a long way to help electric vehicle owners, especially since Ghana is making a big move to integrate EVs into the automobile space.

Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, is going big on artificial intelligence. The CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, just announced that the company is building a massive new data center, called Hyperion, to fuel its next generation of powerful AI tools.

According to Zuckerberg, Hyperion will eventually produce five gigawatts (GW) of computing power, enough to power millions of homes. To put it into perspective, it’ll take up as much space as most of Manhattan!

The Hyperion center will be based in Louisiana, and Meta plans to get 2 GW up and running by 2030, with the full 5 GW goal reached in the years after. This mega facility is part of Meta’s race to outdo other AI giants like OpenAI and Google.

Zuckerberg also revealed a second powerful AI hub called Prometheus, which will go live in 2026 in Ohio. Prometheus alone will deliver 1 GW of power, and when combined with Hyperion, it means Meta will have an enormous amount of computing strength at its fingertips — great for AI, but potentially tough for the environment.

Even so, tech companies are racing to build these supercenters. OpenAI is working on a massive project called Stargate with Oracle and SoftBank. Elon Musk’s xAI also has a giant Colossus supercomputer in the works.

The U.S. government seems fully on board. Officials like President Trump and Energy Secretary Chris Wright are pushing for America to lead the global AI power race. Wright even wrote that AI turns electricity into “the most valuable output imaginable: intelligence.”

By 2030, AI data centers could use up to 20% of all electricity in America — a huge jump from just 2.5% in 2022. That means without big increases in power supply, more towns could face blackouts, water shortages, and higher bills.
