First ever electric car that charges itself while you drive; no cable, no charging station!

Imagine cruising through Accra or Lagos in an electric vehicle that charges itself as you drive, like, no stops at charging stations, no range anxiety, just seamless motion powered by the wind. This may sound like pure sci-fi, but in March 2025, a breakthrough from India made it real.

Behind this innovation is Professor Satyam Kumar Jha from Maharashtra, India. Previously known for coaching competitive exams like NEET and JEE, he has now ventured into clean energy with a bold claim; a self-charging EV system that harnesses wind energy while the vehicle is in motion, operating even at low speeds.

How does it work?

The magic lies in a compact wind generator integrated within the vehicle body. As the car moves, air rushes into specially designed air nozzles and turbines, spinning a generator that sends electricity straight to the battery. This eliminates external plugging and reduces dependence on static charging points.

Some of the interesting things to note about this innovation:

  • You don’t need any charging stations: Meaning that as you drive anywhere, the vehicle recharges itself.
  • It helps keep your anxiety in check: Unlike normal EVs, here you don’t have to worry about battery levels or charging stations.
  • Eco-friendly and cost-saving: No fuel, no extra electricity, just clean wind power.
  • Versatile use: design works for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and full-sized electric cars

    Advanced tech that works in real conditions

While most turbine systems demand strong winds, Jha’s air-tube generator operates effectively at very low wind speeds, which makes it suitable for slow city traffic or rural roads alike. This makes it practical even in places where wind energy is unreliable or inconsistent.

The work was led by Jha in partnership with his wife, Preeti Jha, who combined technical know-how and visionary spirit. The design is compact, scalable, and reportedly adaptable to existing EV platforms, aiming to bring self-sustaining power solutions to both urban and off-grid communities.

The system is still in prototype phase, with prototype tests reported in 2025, backed by preliminary funding and patent filings. Scaling up will require collaboration from automakers, investors, and governments.

If you’re based in Ghana, Nigeria, or anywhere else where charging points are limited or unreliable, Jha’s invention offers hope. A real, self-charging electric vehicle could transform transport in cities prone to power outages and rural zones with patchy electricity. Just remember: for now, it’s still early-stage technology. With proper testing and engineering refinements, however, this might become a game-changer.
