It is arguably true that electric cars are the future, but affordability has been a major obstacle, especially when it comes to truly low-cost options. The challenge has always been electrifying budget-friendly vehicles without cutting corners on quality. But Chinese auto giant BYD is aiming to change that with the new BYD Dolphin Surf, priced at an estimated ÂŁ18,000 (about 290,000 GHS). This could be a game-changer in making electric mobility accessible to more Ghanaians.

The Dolphin Surf is based on the BYD Seagull—a hugely successful car that sold nearly 500,000 units in its first year in China. For the international market, the name has been changed to “Dolphin Surf” to give it a friendlier, more youthful image.

The BYD Dolphin Surf offers two battery options tailored to suit different driving needs. The first is a 30 kWh battery, providing a range of up to 220 kilometers—more than adequate for typical daily commutes within cities like Accra. The second option is a 43.2 kWh battery that stretches the range to around 320 kilometers, ideal for those who need to travel longer distances without worrying about frequent charging stops.

With fuel prices rising and a growing push for eco-friendly transport, Ghana’s car owners are looking for cheaper, more efficient options. The Dolphin Surf offers low maintenance costs, zero emissions, and generous features—giving it real appeal in the local market.

Charging infrastructure is still developing in Ghana, but with home charging setups and private stations expanding, an affordable EV like this could make electric driving more realistic. The ability to charge quickly means less waiting time and more convenience for busy urban lifestyles. For those seeking a budget-friendly, modern car, the Dolphin Surf could be the perfect solution.

Inside, the car prioritizes both comfort and technology. It features a large touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, sporty faux-leather seats, and a mix of high-quality materials that give it a premium feel. This makes the Dolphin Surf stand out from most budget EVs, many of which tend to feel overly basic or cheaply built. Whether it’s for short errands or long commutes, the interior provides a pleasant and modern driving experience.

When it comes to safety and convenience, the BYD Dolphin Surf is well-equipped. Depending on the trim level, it offers features like adaptive cruise control, rear-view cameras, parking sensors, wireless phone charging, heated front seats, and even a 360-degree surround camera system. These features—usually found in more expensive vehicles—help make the Dolphin Surf a smart and safe choice for Ghanaians seeking both affordability and peace of mind on the road.
