Toyota ditches BMW parts, plans to build its own 400HP Supra

Toyota is diving into a new era of independence as it prepares for a major shift from BMW with its upcoming 6th-generation Supra.

The brand-new sixth-generation model will be powered by a 2.0-liter hybrid powertrain with four turbocharged cylinders, also produced by Toyota, which is expected to generate approximately 400 horsepower.

The fifth-generation GR Supra, built alongside the BMW Z4, was heavily reliant on BMW’s platform and engines since its 2019 revival. However, with the Z4 set to end production in 2026, Toyota is ready to step up.

This shift means Toyota will develop its own chassis, engine, and platform architecture, aiming to deliver a purebred sports car with stronger brand identity and tailored performance.

Toyota plans to diversify its sports car lineup with a two-seater Supra, focusing on performance driving without rear passenger accommodations. A Lexus variant with a 2+2 seating layout is also being developed, offering practicality while maintaining a sporty profile.

There’s speculation that Toyota may be testing a second Supra prototype with a Mazda inline 6-cylinder engine, similar to the e-Skyactiv G gasoline turbo mild hybrid found in the CX-70. Best Car favors the lighter, more fuel-efficient, and nimble 2.0-liter unit for its lighter weight.

Toyota intends to stop producing the BMW Z4 and Supra at its Graz facility in Austria in 2026. While the company is not planning to discontinue the Supra, it is getting ready to introduce a new model that is independent of BMW.

The new Supra is anticipated to become less bulky and focused, and is anticipated to debut in 2027.
