Ghanaians ready to pay GH₵1 fuel levy as it takes effect; see the new prices

The implementation of the GHC 1 fuel levy announced by the Ministry of Energy takes effect on Wednesday, July 19, 2025 (today).

As earlier confirmed by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, the GH₵1 fuel levy will officially come into effect on Wednesday, July 16, as part of broader government measures to restore financial discipline and stability within Ghana’s power sector.

However, the announcement generated mixed reactions from Ghanaians, especially opposition figures. They questioned the essence of the levy, striking a comparison to the high cost of living in the country. While they showed no interest in the implementation, others welcomed the idea with open arms.

Despite the pushback from a few, the Energy Ministry maintains that the levy is essential for paying the legacy debt and revitalizing the power sector, it has instructed the Ghana Revenue Authority to begin collecting the fee.

Several Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have begun adjusting their pump prices to reflect the levy.

At StarOil, the price of petrol has risen to GH₵12.59 per litre, while diesel now sells at GH₵13.99. RON 95 is going for GH₵14.99 per litre. However, in a move to cushion customers, the company has announced discounted prices at selected stations; GH₵11.99 for Super (petrol) and GH₵13.79 for diesel.

Other major players like GOIL have also revised their prices. A litre of petrol now goes for GH₵12.88, up from the previous GH₵12.07. Diesel has also seen a jump, increasing from GH₵13.20 to GH₵14.38.

With these new pump prices taking hold, the effect of the levy is being felt directly in the pockets of consumers — a reminder of the trade-offs involved in government efforts to stabilize and improve Ghana’s energy infrastructure.

Below are some reactions gathered across social media.
