Lucid Motors, the American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer known for its luxury and innovation, has just made history by setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance ever driven by an electric car on a single charge.
The star of the show was the Lucid Air Grand Touring, which travelled an astonishing 1,205 kilometres (about 749 miles) from St. Moritz in Switzerland to Munich, Germany, without stopping to charge. This achievement not only highlights Lucid’s cutting-edge technology but also signals a major leap forward for EVs as a whole, showing that range anxiety could soon be a thing of the past.
What makes this feat even more impressive is that the Air Grand Touring went far beyond its already impressive EPA-estimated range of 512 miles. That’s over 237 extra miles squeezed out of a single charge—more than what many petrol-powered vehicles could manage on a full tank. The drive was supervised by the Guinness World Records team, and behind the wheel was entrepreneur Umit Sabanci. The car’s performance is a testament to Lucid’s emphasis on in-house engineering, from its motors to its battery systems, all optimized for power and efficiency.
Lucid has always been about more than just sleek looks. The Grand Touring trim is no exception—it’s powered by a dual-motor all-wheel drive system that pumps out a combined 830 horsepower, allowing it to go from 0 to 100 km/h in just over 3 seconds. The battery, a robust 112 kWh pack, is engineered for maximum energy density and can be charged ultra-fast at up to 300 kW. This level of performance puts it squarely in competition with other top luxury EV brands like Tesla, Porsche, and Mercedes-Benz.
The interior of the Lucid Air is equally luxurious. It features a spacious cabin packed with high-end materials, a floating touchscreen interface, and over-the-air software updates, just like a smartphone. It’s designed not only to drive well but also pamper its passengers, offering a quiet and tech-savvy environment on the move.
For many Ghanaians and global EV skeptics, the question often arises: can electric cars go the distance? The answer, according to Lucid Motors, is a resounding yes. This record-breaking journey proves that EVs are not just good for short city commutes—they’re more than capable of long-distance travel, and in some cases, they even outperform traditional petrol cars. It’s a clear signal that electric vehicles are no longer a futuristic concept but the present and future of mobility.
In a world increasingly moving toward cleaner energy and sustainable transportation, Lucid’s accomplishment is more than just a headline. It’s a wake-up call for the global auto industry, and a hopeful sign for countries like Ghana that are beginning to explore greener transport solutions. As EV infrastructure continues to grow and battery technology evolves, journeys like the one from Switzerland to Germany may soon become the norm rather than the exception.
