In an unfortunate turn of events, a tragic accident occurred at the University of Cape Coast’s second gate on Wednesday, June 19, around 12:45 p.m., when a truck ran into two saloon cars, a tricycle, and a pedestrian.
This distressing incident, captured on CCTV, showed the moment the truck—seemingly out of control—rammed into the two saloon cars attempting to merge onto the main busy stretch. The tricycle involved in the fatal crash was crushed, along with a pedestrian waiting to cross the road.
The footage shows a sand-filled truck barreling toward the vehicles before violently crashing into them and striking the pedestrian. Videos circulating online depict the wreckage, with the cars completely destroyed and debris scattered across the road.
Eyewitnesses who gathered at the scene assisted in rescuing the occupants of the vehicles. Some victims were found lifeless, covered in blood, while others suffered serious injuries.
Fortunately, the pedestrian has been confirmed alive despite sustaining severe injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
While many suspect the truck driver lost control due to brake failure, this has not yet been officially confirmed by the authorities.
The Ghana Highway Authority, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the Ministry of Roads and Highways, and other relevant stakeholders are being urged to conduct routine checks on tipper trucks operating on the nation’s highways. There are also calls for stricter enforcement to ensure that drivers perform regular maintenance on their vehicles before hitting the roads, in order to prevent such tragic incidents.
