A severe traffic jam has almost brought vehicles to a standstill for hours after a tipper truck loaded with stones overturned on the Accra-Tema Motorway, blocking multiple lanes.
The truck spilled its load between the 18 Junction and the 1st Signboard area. As a result, cars have been trapped in an immense gridlock with no way out.
Emergency services and police have been slow to respond and manage the situation, leaving both private and commercial drivers stranded. Many drivers expressed frustration over the lack of a quick response.
Meanwhile, the Director General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has called on the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to respond swiftly to road incidents, including the current gridlock situation at the Accra-Tema Motorway.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Mr. Amaliba said it is the role of the MMTD to clear such incidents on the road.
“This falls within the ambit of the MTTD. Anytime there is a distress call on the road, the MTTD must respond. Road Safety comes in when these agencies are not playing their part. We are a regulator, not an implementing agency,” he clarified.
Mr. Amaliba stated that if the MTTD is not doing its job, the NRSA can draw its attention, but it’s not within their mandate to clear the truck’s road. He also gave an update on the amendment of Legislative Instrument (LI) 2180, which governs road traffic regulations in Ghana, saying, “The Attorney General’s Department is currently finalising it, and it will soon be presented to Parliament.”
Drivers have been urged to avoid the stretch and use alternative routes to minimize delays.
