A fatal car accident has claimed the lives of three basic school students and a taxi driver at Natwibuw on the Winneba-Apam highway in the Central Region.
Reports indicate that the incident occurred around 4 pm on Monday, when the children were returning from Uncle Rich and St. Paul basic schools. Unfortunately, another vehicle collided with the taxi they were on board.
Eyewitness accounts claim that the other driver of a Toyota Rav 4 registered GN 5507-18 collided with the taxi, registered CR 748-20, due to wrongful overtaking, with the taxi driver dying instantly. The emergency crew struggled to retrieve his body from the mangled vehicle.
One of the students was also pronounced dead on the spot, while two others died while on admission at the Trauma and Specialist in Winneba, raising the death toll to four. Two other students who survived the crash are receiving treatment.
“A follow-up by the Rescue team confirmed seven (7) casualties, with four (4) in critical condition receiving treatment,” read a report by the Ghana National Fire Service.
The taxi was completely damaged beyond repair, while the RAV4 sustained partial damage to the front side, windscreen, and engine compartment.
Despite eyewitness accounts, “an investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the crash”. Drivers are strongly cautioned to avoid wrongful overtaking and adhere to road safety regulations to prevent fatal crashes such as this.
