Volvo is charging into the future with the upcoming launch of its all-electric EX60 SUV, a next-generation model set to debut globally in January 2026. Positioned as the electric successor to the best-selling XC60, the EX60 is designed to compete directly with the Tesla Model Y, Audi Q6 e-tron, and BMW iX3, marking a bold step in Volvo’s electrification strategy.

According to Auto Express, the EX60 will be the first vehicle built on Volvo’s new SPA3 platform, a scalable and modular architecture engineered for electric vehicles. This platform promises enhanced efficiency, longer range, and intelligent core computing. Volvo says the SPA3 is designed to “learn and evolve over time,” enabling the EX60 to receive over-the-air updates that improve performance and add new features throughout its lifecycle.

One of the most groundbreaking features of the EX60 is its structural battery pack, where the battery is integrated into the car’s frame rather than mounted beneath it. This design improves rigidity, reduces weight, and boosts energy density. As Electrifying.com reports, this innovation could help the EX60 achieve a range close to 400 miles, placing it among the top contenders in the premium EV segment.

The EX60 will also debut Volvo’s multi-adaptive safety belt system, a world-first technology that adjusts in real time based on crash dynamics and passenger profiles. While it’s not yet confirmed whether the EX60 will inherit the advanced LiDAR suite from the flagship EX90, Volvo has hinted at experimenting with various sensor technologies to enhance safety and semi-autonomous driving capabilities.

Design-wise, the EX60 will carry Volvo’s signature Scandinavian minimalism. Expect a sleek silhouette, flush door handles, and the iconic “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights. The rear design will feature split tail-lights embedded in the rear glass, a design language shared with the EX90 and EX30, as seen in teaser images shared by Volvo and detailed by Auto Express.

During a 2025 investor presentation, Volvo CEO Jim Rowan underscored the company’s bold direction amid industry turbulence. “2025 will be a year of transition,” Rowan said. “The global car industry is facing several uncertainties: cyclical, structural, transformational and geopolitical… we and the rest of the industry will be severely tested this year”.

He further emphasized the company’s diverse electrification strategy, noting: “The depth and the variety of our balanced product portfolio is one of our greatest assets. We will expand the lineup of fully electric, plug-in hybrid, and mild-hybrid cars… and we’ll do this in over 80 countries around the world”.

As TopElectricSUV notes, the EX60 is expected to be priced around $60,000 and will be one of five new EVs Volvo plans to launch by 2026.

With the EX60, Volvo is not just introducing another electric SUV it’s reaffirming its position as a forward-thinking automaker, blending sustainability, cutting-edge design, and resilient strategy into a compelling electric future.
