New Toyota bakkie coming to South Africa – But there’s a catch

South Africa’s love affair with bakkies is no secret. From rugged farm roads to city streets, these versatile workhorses are part of the national identity. So when Toyota confirmed a new bakkie is on its way to Mzansi, ears perked up. But before you get too excited, there’s a twist in the tale.

Toyota is preparing to launch a compact, budget-friendly bakkie in South Africa, likely under the revived Stallion nameplate, a nostalgic nod to the beloved utility vehicle that once roamed local roads in the ’80s and ’90s. Internationally known as the Hilux Champ or IMV 0, this new model is built on a simplified ladder-frame platform and is already in production in Thailand.

The catch? it’s not coming just yet.

Despite its debut in Southeast Asia in late 2023, Toyota South Africa has indicated that the new bakkie will only arrive sometime in 2025 or 2026, due to local market adjustments, homologation processes, and branding decisions. While the “Hilux” name carries immense weight in South Africa, Toyota has yet to trademark the “Hilux Champ” locally — suggesting a rebrand is in the works, as reported by TopAuto.

Instead, all signs point to the Stallion badge making a comeback. Toyota has recently renewed the Stallion trademark in South Africa, a move that hints at its intent to tap into local nostalgia while offering a more affordable alternative to the full-sized Hilux.

So, what can buyers expect?

The new bakkie is designed to be no-frills, functional, and affordable — ideal for small businesses, tradespeople, and fleet operators. It’s expected to feature a club-cab layout, modest engine options, and a stripped-down interior focused on utility over luxury. Think of it as a spiritual successor to the Nissan 1400 or the original Toyota Stallion — simple, reliable, and built to work.

Toyota’s broader 2025 lineup for South Africa also includes updates to the Corolla Cross, Fortuner GR-Sport, and GR Yaris, as well as the delayed arrival of the bZ4X electric SUV, according to Toyota South Africa.

While the wait may be frustrating, the payoff could be worth it. If Toyota gets the pricing and branding right, the new Stallion could become a game-changer in the light commercial vehicle segment.

Until then, South Africans will have to keep their eyes on the horizon — and maybe hold off on that next bakkie purchase just a little longer.
