The world’s leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles and power batteries, BYD, has officially launched its operations in Benin in collaboration with CFAO Mobility.

The 100% electric BYD vehicles were presented at a press conference held in Ganhi, Cotonou, on April 24, 2025.

During the event, BYD introduced BYD ATTO3 and BYD DOLPHIN and inaugurated an after-sales service center and showroom in Cotonou, providing local consumers with a comprehensive range of services.

Ramy Yao, Sales Director of BYD Africa, expressed, “Entering the Benin market is a proud milestone for BYD. Benin’s bold stance on electrification aligns perfectly with our vision. Together with our local partner, we are confident in driving the success of e-mobility in this forward-thinking nation.”

“We are honored to be the first company in Benin to introduce fully electric vehicles alongside comprehensive supporting services. The arrival of BYD electric vehicles in Benin marks a pivotal milestone in the region’s energy transition. Our commitment is to act as an enabler for this shift, streamlining adoption through tailored solutions to make sustainable mobility accessible and practical for all,” said Etienne Audeoud, Managing Director of CFAO Mobility, Benin.

BYD has expanded into 16 countries and regions across Africa, including Nigeria, Rwanda, Kenya, and South Africa.

As a Fortune Global 500 company, BYD remains steadfast in its commitment to innovation and building a sustainable future. In November 2024, the company made history by becoming the first to roll out its 10-millionth NEV. It is making even more sales in 2025 and outselling top EV makers like Tesla.

BYD says it is committed to continuing its collaboration with local partners to strengthen its presence in the African market and provide a wider range of sustainable transportation solutions to consumers.

BYD made its debut entry to Ghana in 2010 when Cofieco and  Huang Limited, an automobile marketing company in Ghana, launched the BYD FO saloon car onto the Ghanaian market to solve the transportation needs of low-income drivers who wanted to own cars, due to its low fuel consumption rate.

However, there hasn’t been any follow-up or broad adoption of BYD automobiles in Ghana. Furthermore, no recent declarations have explicitly said that BYD’s EV lineup will be significantly expanded or introduced to the Ghanaian market.

BYD’s entry into the Benin market soon after entering Nigeria shows that it is committed to dominating the African EV industry and is growing and expanding. Its re-entry into Ghana may be closer than we realize.
