Commuters traveling between Madina and central Accra should prepare for significant traffic disruptions, as the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has announced a temporary reduction in lanes along the busy corridor starting Sunday, June 22. The lane reduction, which will remain in effect for four months, is a necessary step in the progress of the Accra–Tema Motorway and Extensions Project.

The construction zone, centered around the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, will see both directions of traffic reduced from four lanes to three, to make way for the erection of a central pier for the interchange’s new bridge. Officials from the GHA emphasize that the lane reduction is crucial to ensure the safety of workers and road users, as heavy machinery and engineering teams begin foundational work for the key infrastructure upgrade.

In a press release dated June 19, the GHA stated: “To facilitate central pier construction works for the expansion of the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange Bridge, the number of lanes on the North–South bound carriageway (Madina to Accra direction) and vice versa will be temporarily reduced from four (4) lanes to three (3). This adjustment will take effect from Sunday, 22nd June 2025, and is expected to last for four (4) months.”

The statement further urged motorists “to exercise caution, follow directional signs, and cooperate with traffic management officials throughout the duration of the work.”

The Madina–Accra corridor is one of the busiest stretches in the Greater Accra Region, serving thousands of vehicles daily. With the anticipated congestion, authorities are urging motorists to plan ahead, explore alternate routes, and follow traffic control signs throughout the affected zones. Police personnel and traffic wardens will be deployed to key junctions to assist with traffic flow during peak hours.

Drivers are also advised to adjust their travel times where possible to avoid the morning and evening rush. “We encourage corporate bodies and institutions to consider flexible working schedules during this period,” added the spokesperson.

Public transport operators, especially those running trotro and taxi services along the corridor, have expressed concerns about the impact on journey times and operational costs. In response, the GHA has assured the public of regular updates and real-time traffic alerts, with collaboration from the National Road Safety Authority and local government officials.

Despite the disruption, many residents acknowledge the necessity of the project, recognizing it as a long-overdue step toward easing chronic congestion on the corridor.

The lane reduction is part of a broader push to modernize Ghana’s transport infrastructure and ease urban mobility in the rapidly growing capital. Once completed, the Accra–Tema Motorway expansion is expected to transform east-west travel across the city and significantly reduce travel time.

In the meantime, motorists will need to rely on patience and smart planning to navigate the months ahead.
