A tipper truck accident has plunged several regions into darkness after striking a major transmission line, triggering one of Ghana’s most significant power outages in recent times.
The incident, which occurred around 1:42 p.m. on May 1, 2025, saw the truck unloading stones at a private construction site when its raised bucket accidentally struck the Nkawkaw–Konongo transmission line. The impact was immediate, causing severe damage to the line and leading to a widespread system failure.
According to a joint statement by Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the damage resulted in the tripping of power plants at Aboadze and Anwomaso, cutting off electricity in the Western, Central, and Northern regions, as well as parts of Accra.
“Our engineers have mobilized to the location to repair the damaged transmission line, and work is ongoing to restore all affected areas by 6 p.m. today,” GRIDCo and ECG assured in their statement.
The blackout caused frustration among residents and businesses, with many left scrambling to adapt to the sudden power loss. Market vendors worried about food spoilage, and businesses relying on refrigeration rushed to find alternatives.
Meanwhile, engineers are working tirelessly to restore normalcy, but officials urge patience. “We apologize for the inconvenience this incident has caused,” the companies added, emphasizing their commitment to stabilizing the grid as quickly as possible. For now, affected regions remain hopeful that the power will return soon, but this accident serves as a costly reminder of how a single miscalculation can leave millions in the dark.
