Tesla Cancels Cybertruck Range Extender, Leaving Buyers Frustrated

Tesla has officially canceled the much-anticipated Cybertruck Range Extender, marking another setback for its futuristic pickup. The battery pack was designed to give the Cybertruck an extra 120 miles of range, but after months of delays, Tesla has confirmed it will not be selling it at all.

When Tesla first unveiled the Cybertruck, it promised an impressive 500-mile range, making it one of the longest-lasting electric trucks on the market. However, when the actual production model launched, it only offered about 325 miles per charge—far less than originally expected.

To make up for this, Tesla introduced an optional Range Extender, a $16,000 battery pack that would sit in the truck bed and add extra miles. For many Cybertruck customers, this seemed like a great way to get closer to the original promise of 500 miles of driving range.

On May 7, 2025, Tesla officially announced that it had given up on the Cybertruck Range Extender. The company confirmed that it would not be producing or selling the battery pack, and customers who had paid deposits for the extra battery began receiving refunds.

Tesla quietly removed the Range Extender from its online store before making the announcement, leaving many Cybertruck buyers confused until the company confirmed the cancellation.

This cancellation is just one of many changes and setbacks Tesla has faced with the Cybertruck. The original starting price of $39,900 was abandoned, and the cheapest version now costs $60,990. Performance figures have also changed, and early production models have been criticized for build quality concerns.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has admitted that the Cybertruck is one of the hardest vehicles Tesla has ever built, and production has faced unexpected challenges. However, many customers feel disappointed that the Cybertruck they were promised is not the Cybertruck they received.

What’s next?

With Tesla canceling the Range Extender, buyers now have to settle for the standard range, unless Tesla introduces a new solution. As of now, there are no new announcements about an alternative upgrade to extend the Cybertruck’s mileage.

Despite the disappointment, demand for the Cybertruck remains high, and Tesla is working to increase production. But with higher costs, lower range, and unfulfilled promises, the Cybertruck’s reputation is already facing challenges.
