A pregnant woman and nine others have lost their lives, with several others injured in a gory accident near Assin Besease in the central region, on the Cape Coast-Kumasi Highway.
According to Lawson TV reports, the accident, involving a Yutong bus with the registration number GT-5136-11 and a Tipper truck registered GA-2267-14, occurred in the early hours of Monday, May 12, around 7 am. The Yutong bus was moving from Cape Coast to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
Eyewitnesses claim the Yutong bus was seen veering off its lane while swaying left and right, and facing the tipper truck. The tipper truck driver attempted to make space for the bus, but at the same time, he tried to avoid a pothole. This made it impossible for him to make space for the bus, causing the two to collide.
The truck driver reportedly died on the spot, along with nine others, including a heavily pregnant woman. Fortunately, reports are that doctors have been able to save the twin babies of the woman. Videos of the incident showed debris from the Yutong bus lying around on the side of the road, with the bus itself utterly damaged. Injured victims have been sent to Assin Fosu, New Adubease, and Praso hospitals for treatment.
From January to March 2025, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) reported 3,674 road traffic crashes in Ghana, involving 6,143 vehicles and 5,039 casualties. The number of cases, vehicles involved, fatalities, injuries, and pedestrian knockdowns increased by 7.9%, 6.1%, 23.5%, 12.1%, and 13.4% compared to 2024.
This alarming trend calls for further action from drivers to take extra caution on the road and exercise patience while driving. Institutions managing road safety interventions in Ghana, including the police, MTTD, NRSA, and other stakeholders, are also urged to take further action to ensure safety on our roads.
