Mercedes-Benz is taking a surprising step by adding a new member to its high-end S-Class family—a luxury van. The Vision V concept was unveiled ahead of the Shanghai Auto Show, and it will kick-start a fresh lineup of vans under the names VLE and VLS. These new models are believed will change how family and executive transportation is undertaken.
S-Class Family and the New Vision V
Most Mercedes-Benz models are divided into four main families: the A-Class, C-Class, E-Class, and the flagship S-Class. Each family has its unique members that cater to different needs. For example, the GLS is the SUV representative of the S-Class family, while the EQS carries the S-Class legacy into the electric vehicle world. Now, Mercedes is introducing another unexpected member into this iconic lineup, a minivan, designed to bring a luxurious twist to family and executive travel.

Mercedes released a teaser image of the Vision V concept, and it already has fans talking. The image shows the rear seating area of the van, packed with luxury features. Two captain’s chairs separated by a soft armrest, a fancy burl walnut tray table with cup holders, and even a chessboard with crystal and sterling silver chess pieces. The van is also glowing with icy-blue ambient lighting along the console and speaker grilles. By the way, the speakers come from Burmester—a company known for making some of the best car audio systems.
The seats are another standout feature. They have a retro design with tuck-and-roll upholstery, giving the van a mid-century vibe that’s totally new for Mercedes. The seats also look super comfortable with leg rests and cylindrical cushions that wouldn’t be out of place in a designer furniture shop. The overall look of the cabin is a lot like the 2023 Concept CLA-Class, which means some of these stylish finishes might actually make it into production.
The New Names: VLE and VLS

Mercedes isn’t calling these vans “minivans.” Instead, they’re being referred to as “grand limousines,” showing off their luxurious side. The company says the Vision V will inspire a new series of vans for different uses—family travel, executive shuttles, or even chauffeur-driven rides. The lineup will include two trims: VLE, which will be more affordable, and VLS, offering top-level luxury.
Since the concept is debuting in Shanghai, these vans are likely aimed at markets like China and Japan, where sliding doors and luxury vans are popular. The VLE and VLS could compete with models like the Lexus LM in these regions.
Why It Matters
Mercedes-Benz is clearly serious about expanding its luxury offerings, blending practicality with the prestige of its S-Class lineup. Whether these vans are meant for families, business executives, or VIPs, they’re set to change how we think about transportation. With the Vision V concept, the future of luxury vans is looking bright.
